CO2 Laser Resurfacing with the eCO2
Before & After
Please note some of the before and after images may include a combination of different procedures. Our goal is always to optimize outcomes and sometimes that is best achieved with a combination treatments. The goal of the galleries is not to highlight just the treatment itself but the possibilities of a carefully constructed treatment plan and to achieve the best results. Individual results may vary and these before and after photos do not guarantee that anybody and or everybody who does these procedures will achieve the same or similar results.
As advanced signs of aging begin to show in our late 40s and early 50s and get worse in our 60s and 70s – deep seated texture, pigmentation, wrinkles, laxity, actinic keratoses – we have to start to consider more aggressive strategies to correct the effects and restore your healthy skins appearance.
At derma skin institute we have the most comprehensive techniques and technologies in the area to address these concerns. Our lead cosmetic and aesthetic dermatologist, Dr Sajic has developed the 5 Dimension Skin Lift that addresses the aging components of Degradation, Deflation and Descent in all 5 Dimensions of the skin – Bone, Fat, Deep skin tissue, Skin surface/texture and Muscle.
Fractional CO2 Laser treatment is the gold standard that form the cornerstone for non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment. Despite numerous advancements in overall skin rejuvenation, CO2 Laser treatment remains as the single most effective non-surgical treatment for safely treating deep wrinkles, acne scars, chickenpox and trauma scars and for improving texture from aging, pollution and sun damage. While everything we do at derma skin institute is customized, very rarely will we not recommend the CO2 Laser in the appropriate patient with advanced signs of photodamage and aging (ie wrinkles at rest and pigmentation).
Developed for treating damaged and aged skin since the 1980s, the CO2 Laser resurfaces the skin with targeted beams of light which remove surface cells of the epidermis, making way for fresh, new skin. In addition, it penetrates deeper than any other laser currently available to stimulate the highest level of collagen production, which tightens and plumps skin over time.
Traditional CO2 laser treatments were fully ablative – meaning that they would remove the entire surface of the skin in the area being treated. While effective, this type of treatment predisposes the patient to much more pain and possible adverse effects like prolonged redness and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Advancements in laser technology have led to the development of “fractional” lasers which means they only treat a fraction of the skin. Just like a shower head will split a single flow of water into multiple small flows, fractional lasers will in essence provide the same effect. This allows the laser energy to be applied to only certain areas of the skin, referred to as columns. During your treatment we can control the depth and density of theses columns in a manner that will leaves some of the original skin unaffected, and in doing so substantially speed up your recovery process and minimize side-effects and downtime.
The new eCO2 laser technology improves on the safety of fractional CO2 lasers in several ways. First, it produces small micro-laser beams that radiate into the skin and produce microscopic ablative columns (MAC’s) or small areas of injury to the skin. Proprietary technology within the eCO2 minimizes thermal bystander effect, which minimizes the chance of adverse post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. By treating a fraction of the skin, your skin will recover faster and with less down time and less risks of adverse effects.
In contrast to other CO2 lasers the eCO2 from Lutronic uses Controlled Chaos Technology (CCT) to radiate multiple microscopic laser beams that fire in a controlled irregular pattern that helps avoid focused heat and linear demarcation along non-lasered areas. This technological advance of CCT allows for faster healing, recovery and more natural looking results.
Furthermore, with numerous parameters that can be adjusted during treatment and based on your needs and goals, your physician can precisely control the depth of penetration of the laser beam into the skin. In this way we can provide you with a wide variety of laser resurfacing – from light, to intermediate, and deep resurfacing.
Like most things in life, it is not just the technology, but the person operating it that leads to the best results. Just like formula 1 cars are capable of amazing things that the car you drive to work can’t match, the same concept applies to ablative resurfacing laser treatment. In the hands of a highly trained, knowledgeable professional, CO2 laser resurfacing is a safe way to dramatically improve your skin’s appearance. In the hands of a poorly trained individual, lasers can be ineffective or even dangerous. For this reason, when considering CO2 laser treatments ensure you will be treated with a professionally trained physician; do not make your pick based solely on a brand name laser or the best deal. Fixing poorly done results can be much more costly – including irreversible damage!
What is your best bet? Choose a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who has the proper qualifications and is board certified. Board certification means that your dermatologist has undergone a rigorous training residency (specialty training after medical school) that includes non-surgical treatments such as laser skin resurfacing.
As leaders in the non-invasive and non-surgical anti-aging treatments we at derma skin institute have developed protocols to target many of your concerns with the eCO2.
A full face can be treated in about 20 to 45 minutes with minimal downtime when compared with traditional CO2 laser resurfacing. It is used for:
- Lines & deep wrinkles on face
- Tighten skin on face and neck
- Improve appearance of scars
- Improve skin tone around eyelids jowls and neck
- Improve sun-damaged skin and texture in the face, chest and hands
Given that CO2 can come with risks of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation – especially in patients of darker skin colour – we may recommend that you pre-treat your skin with skin care treatments that work on pigmentation. These may include one or more of – Hydroquinone, Arbutin, Vitamin C.
Additionally while the CO2 laser treatment is the most comprehensive non-surgical laser treatment for skin rejuvenation and resurfacing, optimal results may be obtained by adding Radiofrequency micro-needling with the RF pixel or Morpheus8, volumization with dermal fillers and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for optimal and quicker healing. It is important to understand the goals and limitations of any procedures and to go over this with your doctor before the procedure.
To prepare for your eCO2™ treatment, it may be advised that you:
- Do not smoke for a few weeks
- Avoid certain medications for a few weeks (blood thinners, retinol among others)
- Do not drink alcohol for at least a week
- As some patients are very sensitive to pain, we may need to administer pain medication that may make you drowsy after the procedure. If you know you are very sensitive, we recommend that you arrange for someone else to drive you to the clinic.
- Discuss any and all concerns with your doctor
- Avoid the sun for at least two weeks. Even after two weeks you will have new baby skin. It is important to protect your skin with proper skin care and sun block
- Be prepared to follow post laser instructions very diligently
During your consultation, our team will give you detailed instructions on how to prepare for your procedure. Sticking to those guidelines will help to ensure your safety and the success of your treatment.
We will prepare you for the treatment by applying topical anesthetic cream for 30-45 minutes. We may also include injectable anesthesia, prescription pain medication and/or a form of laughing gas call Penthrox to make your treatment more tolerable. The level of anesthesia will vary depending on the depth of the laser treatment chosen for your treatment as well as your level of pain tolerance. It is our goal to make you as comfortable as possible. Some anesthesia may require you to arrange someone else to drive you.
Once you are properly anesthetized we will begin the laser treatment. We will place protective eyewear prior to beginning the laser treatment. You will feel zaps along small areas of the treatment area which will range in size from 4-18mm. The laser will be advanced along the treatment area. Depending on the settings one or multiple passes may be done.
Once finished we will apply a healing lotion and sunscreen on your face. You will be given a post care instruction sheet. Make sure to tell your doctor if you have cold sores as we will need to give you medication to prevent it from coming out while you are healing.
The recovery will depend on the depth and strength of your treatment. Light CO2 laser peels generally have minimal down time and most patients will have slight redness and peeling lasting over 2-5 days. You can generally go back to work immediately. With more aggressive treatments you will experience significant redness, crusting and possibly swelling for the first 2-5 days. Pain is generally mild to moderate and can usually be handled with mild pain medication. Very rarely some patients will need prescription pain medication. Most patients can get back to all of their regular activities after 7 days with the more aggressive CO2 treatment. In all cases adding Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to your treatment can speed up recovery by 24-48 hrs as well as enhance the efficacy of your CO2 treatment.
The results from your eCO2 Laser treatment should be visible immediately after recovery (1-2 wks), and the results will continue to improve over the course of healing for upto 6 months. After your treatment, the skin cells will continue to tighten and become more plump and supple.
Cost is dependent on the area being done, type of procedure and how deep / aggressive the treatment will be. Please schedule your consultation to discuss the best treatment strategy for you. Generally full face procedure will be 1200 / session for lighter treatments while it would be 2400 for an aggressive treatment.
Yes. CO2 laser treatment is a critical but not sole component of our patented 5 Dimension Skin Lift (available only at Derma Skin institute). We strongly believe that combination treatments – whether at the same time, or more gradually at separate visits will give you the full benefit of looking the most refreshed and most natural
Most commonly, we can combine CO2 laser resurfacing with AccuTite™, Dermal fillers ( Juvederm, Radiesse, Restylane or Belotero) radiofrequency microneedling (Morpheus8).
For optimal recovery after ablative laser treatments we recommend adding Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), which can speed up recovery by 24-48 hrs.
If you are interested in a combination of procedures, be sure to discuss this with your dermatologist during your consultation. Your dermatologist will advise you on whether you can undergo the desired treatments simultaneously or if it would be best to undergo them separately.
