What is Microneedling?
Microneedling or collagen induction therapy is a non-invasive rejuvenation technique. Microneedling is one of the beauty treatments that we offer at DerMa Clinic with the aim of restoring collagen in the skin. Collagen is responsible for keeping the skin soft and young, but it is lost due to different environmental factors over time. With this treatment, we increase collagen production, leaving the skin rejuvenated, helping to combat fine lines, stretch marks, and scars.
During microneedling or collagen induction therapy, our professional dermatologist in Guelph area, Dr. Sajic, performs micro punctures on the skin to generate micro-injuries. This stimulates the skin’s self-repair mechanisms. The skin auto-regenerates when it believes it has been injured so that the production of collagen is increased.
The procedure begins with a cleansing of the skin. Then, we apply an anesthetic cream for 30 minutes. We remove the cream and begin to perform the microneedling.
This way of stimulating collagen production to heal microscopic injuries involves using a roller that passes through the skin, penetrating deep layers without damaging the healthy epidermis.
Note: Since the punctures are incredibly small, they heal literally within a few hours after the procedure. It is also worth noting that microneedling should not be very painful; the procedure is not pleasant, but not so much as to cause pain or fear.
Microneedling is used in the following areas;
- In fighting against aging signs, burns, acne scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks.
- In the penetration of cosmetic assets such as Vitamin C, Retinol, or Hyaluronic Acid. They allow molecules too small as well as large ones, to penetrate the skin.
- In the thickening of the epidermis.
- Its recent application is in the improvement of melasma and vitiligo.
Some of the preference of microneedling over other methods is because it has;
- Fast recovery period
- Short rehabilitation period;
- Does not require pain reliever after the procedure, even with a low threshold of pain sensitivity, i.e., no major side effect.
- A long-lasting effect after the procedure.
Normally in Microneedling therapies, the patient requires three to four monthly sessions for effect to be optimal; in the case of acne scars, it could be a few more. At DerMA Clinic, Dr. Sajic optimizes the treatment sessions to be personalized for each patient according to their needs.
The therapy can be carried out at home or in medical consultations. The latter is recommended because the needles’ size varies and, therefore, you have to know how to handle them. We are trained to provide you with the best care at DerMA clinic.
The equipment in case of domestic use can be found over the counter. The needles are usually up to 0.5 millimeters in size; while those used by professionals range from this to 2.5 millimeters, providing a better response.
As part of the recovery after the use of a roller, it is normal for the skin to become pinkish, so it is usually not good to put on makeup to allow the skin to breathe and rest from the process.
It is essential to eat foods that promote collagen production; for example, banana and oranges. Also, apply moisturizers and sunscreen after the procedure.
Important! The procedure is usually not advised for pregnant and lactating women, people with blood diseases, and perceived tumors.
Microneedling is very effective as it is quick and provides serious and long-lasting results. It is a suitable therapy for women/men who want to look younger, young women with acne, or women who have hormonal problems (such as hypothyroidism). Most importantly, be sure to use Vitamin C Follow-up Serum for the best results!
