As we experience a life well lived, we all pick up scars and valuable wisdom along the way. For those of us who experienced acne outbreaks in our teens and twenties, the acne may have subsided over time – but now we’re noticing scars and uneven texture along our cheeks, forehead, and chest. As we get older, our natural collagen and elastin stores decline which means these scars only get more visible with time. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) microneedling is an innovative, effective treatment that uses the healing properties of our own body’s blood and healing responses to rebuild the skin tone and texture in these areas for a more smooth appearance.
Depending on the type and severity of the acne you experienced, you may have a specific kind or a combination of scar types.
For those of us that experienced deep, cystic acne (often painful and underneath the surface of the skin), the scars we’re noticing are likely depressed or atrophic scars that cave in like little indents along the surface of the skin — commonly on the cheeks. If you have a scar from chicken pox as a child, this is often a clear example of an atrophic scar.
When collagen production is rushed to the site of a wound from an acne site, our skin may have also over-delivered collagen and created a raised (hypertrophic) scar. This kind of scar presents as a tiny bump or raised patch on the skin.
Some of us may have a combination of hypertrophic and atrophic scarring, creating an uneven surface and a patchy appearance. Pigmentation is also common with acne scarring, so you might notice some discolouration or pigmentation where you once had acne.
There are many products that promise to fix acne scars, but the most effective solutions treat the skin beneath the surface and solve the problem with the same reparative processes your body uses to heal any injury. Platelets are regenerative agents already present in your blood (along with red and white blood cells, and other valuable ingredients like growth factors). Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) concentrates these agents to help with tissue repair. Microneedling devices— such as Sylfirm— use ultra-thin, gold-plated pins that penetrate at precise, customized depths, triggering collagen production to rejuvenate, restore, and heal skin deep underneath the surface. By creating consistent micro-injuries, microneedling can reinforce a supportive scaffolding and allow for a smoother, more even look.
PRP microneedling— Sylfirm RF— uses the natural way that your body already heals to fade scars while comprehensively improving the texture of your skin. During PRP microneedling, a small amount of your blood is withdrawn and spun in a centrifuge to extract the plasma & platelets from your blood. Microneedling is calibrated and customized to the topography of scar tissue to ensure that skin remodeling occurs at the most effective depth. Once microneedling has created tiny punctures in the targeted area, the PRP is massaged into the skin to penetrate these microchannels, sparking collagen and elastin production — restoring even tone & texture, fading pigmentation, and reducing the appearance of scars.
Aside from being effective at fading acne scars, PRP microneedling rebuilds and regenerates cell turnover to holistically restore the appearance and health of your skin.
