The most popular treatments at our clinic are loved for their multitasking abilities, and PRP microneedling is a tried-and-true example. Combining the healing capacity of microneedling with the regenerative qualities of your own blood’s platelets, PRP microneedling is a powerful way to harness your body’s natural healing processes with the joined transformative abilities of two trusted treatments.
Your blood is primarily made up of white and red blood cells and liquid plasma. The plasma contains platelets, which are tiny powerhouses responsible for much of your body’s healing, regeneration, and tissue formation. Because cells and plasma have a different consistency, we’re able to withdraw a small amount of blood, spin it in a centrifuge, and separate the plasma from the rest of the blood. When this concentrated, healing plasma is injected back into a specific area of concern, your body’s own regenerative processes are activated to restore, heal, and restore tissue.
Separately, each treatment has a proven capacity to heal but in combination they’re even more effective — these two treatments are a transformative match made in heaven. Using PRP in combination with microneedling can improve healing and decrease the duration of the minor redness and swelling you’ll briefly experience after a microneedling session. Pairing microneedling with PRP allows the plasma to naturally reach the deeper layers of tissue when it’s massaged into the skin; paired effectively in combination with the collagen production naturally sparked by microneedling.
Microneedling uses tiny micro-channels in the skin to tell the body’s healing processes “hey, this area needs your attention.” Our bodies naturally respond to injury: you’ve likely noticed this in the way a scar heals over time. When you’ve got a cut, your body naturally triggers collagen and elastin production in that area to repair the wound. As we get older, collagen and elastin production decline which can cause a loss of volume and density, wrinkles, lines, and uneven texture. By using microneedling we ramp up that production again in an area where we want to see regeneration. PRP is a harmonious catalyst in this process; microneedling allows a pathway for the rich, healing platelets to penetrate the skin and do their work of healing more effectively.
Microneedling has a myriad of applications and can treat multiple concerns at once, including:
– Anti-Aging, Fine lines and wrinkles: an increase in collagen and elastin
– Skin tone, enlarged pores, and texture: this treatment can revitalize and smooth skin, with improved radiance.
– Scarring: this treatment is especially effective for depressed acne scars, surgical scars, or scarring from minor injuries
– Hyperpigmentation: the regeneration that happens can fade discolouration, or age spots
– Stretch marks: an uptick in collagen can make stretch marks less visible in colour and texture
We’ll begin with a consultation where we’ll talk through your goals and build a customized treatment plan that’s completely unique to your needs and concerns. At deRMA Skin Institute in Guelph or Burlington, your treatment will be performed by one of Canada’s leading dermatologists in a comfortable, safe, friendly atmosphere.
In the past, PRP was injected into the skin, but it is becoming more and more common to use it in conjunction with microneedling. In our PRP microneedling treatments, the first part of the treatment creates tiny channels for the PRP to penetrate and regenerate skin, and massaging it into these areas allows for effective penetration.
This non-invasive procedure has minimal downtime, and you’ll be able to head back into your regularly scheduled life the day after treatment. You may have some remaining redness, swelling and irritation in the days following treatment.
You can shorten your recovery time and improve inflammation by closely following post procedure instructions. We will provide post care instructions at your appointment, including best practices / skin care to ensure optimal results. You’ll want to avoid applying too many products to your skin and avoid alcohol-based products and scrubs during the recovery stage. As always, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoid peak sunlight hours to keep skin protected from UV damage.
