What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal filler treatments can restore lost volume, replenish moisture, or add a framework deep underneath the skin. Smooth, firm skin with full lips and cheeks are the key characteristics of a youthful appearance. Our skin begins to lose 1.0-1.5% elasticity as we naturally age and we see shifts in facial structure as bone, fat, elastin, and collagen diminish under the skin. This can cause women and men to look older than they feel. Dermal fillers can spark collagen production and provide immediate lifting and filling effects.
In addition to hyaluronic acid-based fillers, there are other types of injectable treatments designed to address specific concerns. Biostimulant fillers, like RADIESSE® and Sculptra® Aesthetic, work by stimulating the body’s natural collagen production. RADIESSE® contains calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, while Sculptra® uses poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) to gradually restore volume and improve skin texture over time. Skinboosters are another category of injectables that use hyaluronic acid in a finer formulation to deeply hydrate the skin, improving overall tone, elasticity, and glow rather than adding volume.

How does it work?
Dermal fillers are an injectable treatment with immediate results that continue to appear in the weeks following treatment. The active ingredient in most fillers is a substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a multi-functioning, naturally occurring molecule found in the human body which can hold nearly 1,000 times its weight in water, helping to plump and hydrate the skin. Our bodies begin losing about 1 millilitre of HA every year when we’re in our early 30s. The loss results in a deflated appearance, similar to how a grape gradually becomes a raisin. HA dermal fillers come in many different forms and consistencies, including firm, elastic, and soft, to accomplish different goals. Dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and BELOTERO BALANCE® replenish our body’s store of hyaluronic acid.

Obviously right on phone. Do I wait the 10 seconds? No, everybody else is different. If you look at an atomic here,
It looks,
It is just what you see kind of thing and what you think is right at that time. What you feel comfortable, what you think will give them that most natural result. It’s just what you think is and how can you achieve what’s there. Key is always, that’s what I say. Look, you’re looking at it all different depths and so where you’re putting stuff, you’re not going to put shingles in your basement and you’re not going to put concrete on your roof, right? Lift and the musculature or does want to become, she does have on a grand scheme of plate, like a longer, but, and that’s just going to Increase.
So at some point she did it. Probably she wants to lift, pushing this and it’s just going to, there’s no way this type of, so it’s really all about symmetry, not making endless. You can’t really sort do too much without making.

FAQs
How long do results last?
Dermal filler results typically last 6-18 months. The lasting time of your results depends on the volume of fillers used, the size of the targeted area, and your unique facial anatomy. As your muscles and movements change with time, your treatment plan and dosing may also need to change. Your face is uniquely yours and your treatment plan should be too!
Do dermal fillers hurt?
Most patients tolerate filler injections quite well. We use numbing cream as well as a local anaesthetic to help keep you comfortable. Additionally, an anaesthetic is pre-mixed with most fillers. If needed, we may also medicate you with prescription-strength pain medicine. We also have Penthrox® as an option—an effective, fast-acting, non-opioid inhaled analgesic product that helps greatly with pain and anxiety.
Will it be obvious that I’ve had dermal fillers?
Dr. Sajic’s mantra is: “If it looks done—it’s been done wrong.” In the same way that you notice when people have overdone dermal filler results, you likely know many people who have had injectable treatments; but the best results are a well kept secret between the injector and the patient. The patients who have chosen a skilled, experienced injector know that subtle results are key. Dr. Sajic practices the 5-Dimension Skin Plan™, an innovative, science-based approach that considers the whole face instead of “quick fix” approaches that miss the way your features affect each other. This allows us to treat the whole face to maximize symmetry, subtle results, and a balanced outcome for a fresh, more youthful appearance.
What is recovery like?
We will give you post-treatment instructions on how to best care for your skin after the procedure. Generally, this is well tolerated, though there may be bruising. We have medical laser treatments in Guelph & Burlington that can significantly decrease bruising, should you experience it. Avoid massaging your face and generally avoid heavy exercise for the first 48 hours after treatment.
What kinds of dermal fillers do you use at deRMA Skin Institute in Guelph and Burlington?
The fillers we offer at deRMA Skin Institute include products from the following brands:
- JUVÉDERM®
- SKINVIVE™
- Restylane®
- BELOTERO®
- RADIESSE®
- Sculptra® Aesthetic
- ART Filler®
Why use different kinds of dermal fillers? Aren’t they all the same?
Think of fillers like building blocks for your house. Just as concrete is good for your foundation but not your roof, different fillers make sense in different areas of the face. Your lips will generally need a different type of filler than your chin, while your cheeks need a different filler than your jaw and forehead.
Regardless of what filler we use, our goal is always to work with you to give you the best possible outcome: to match how you feel on the inside with what you see in the mirror. Youthful, vibrant, and unstoppable.
Are neuromodulators the same as dermal fillers?
Both treatments are injectables, but neuromodulators act to relax the muscles causing wrinkles or folds. This can have preventative effects; neuromodulators keep lines and folds from forming and deepening by decreasing the repeated movements that cause them. But they also actively smooth existing folds. While dermal fillers generally address depleted volume or fullness in areas like tear trough and cheeks and help smooth the surface of the skin, neuromodulators like BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® are most effectively used on dynamic wrinkles, which differ from depleted volume. If you’re looking to relax the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles on the face, we may recommend a combination treatment plan.
What does treatment feel like?
We prioritize comfort, safety, and a pleasant experience for all of our patients from consultation through to beautiful results. We find that most patients tolerate filler injections quite well. We use numbing cream as well as a local anaesthetic to help keep you comfortable. Additionally, an anaesthetic is pre-mixed with many injectable treatments. If needed, we may also medicate you with prescription-strength pain medicine. We also have Penthrox® as an option—an effective, fast-acting, non-opioid inhaled analgesic product that helps greatly with pain and anxiety.
Can I combine dermal fillers with other treatments?
Yes! Using different injectable treatments in intentional, artful combinations is one element of Dr. Sajic’s 5 Dimension Skin Plan™ — you can learn more about that here. We may customize a treatment plan that targets multiple concerns in one treatment regimen or procedure. We often combine different types of fillers with other procedures (such as BOTOX, lasers, radiofrequency, and other energy-based treatments) to produce the most natural-looking results. Our goal is to strengthen the skin’s natural ability to heal, adapt, and stay healthy over time. We want to work with you to achieve the best version of you. A rested, glowing, vibrant you!
Is there downtime needed?
No, non-invasive injectable dermal fillers don’t require booking time off and can be easily scheduled as part of a normal day. You may notice some minor bruising following treatment which can be gently camouflaged with foundation or powder.
