What are BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN®?
These three products are called “neuromodulators”, injectable treatments that work by relaxing the muscles responsible for fine lines and folds. While BOTOX is the most well-known of these three treatments, all three products––BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN––contain the same primary active ingredient for wrinkle reduction: botulinum toxin type A. The main difference between each injectable is the protein presence in each formula that affects the way they blend, interact, or smooth when administered. These injections temporarily block the nerve impulses that cause the muscles to contract and crease the skin. As a result, lines are smoother and prevented from deepening.
What do BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® treat?
These neuromodulators can offer effective treatment for any concerns affected by muscle contractions. The most common treatment areas are around the forehead and eyes, including forehead lines, frown lines (glabellar lines), bunny lines on the sides of the nose, “11s” (those vertical lines between the eyebrows), crow’s feet or smile lines, some dimples, and other concerns along the neck, chest, or jawline. BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® also have non-cosmetic applications for concerns like migraines, jaw clenching, and more.
How does it work?
BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN treat visible lines and wrinkles by inhibiting the contractions causing them. These repeated movements occur whenever our faces change expressions, such as squinting, frowning, or smiling. Every time you squint, you’re creating or deepening a line, in the same way that a piece of paper creases when repeatedly folded in the same direction. As we get older, our body’s natural collagen and elastin stores decline and skin may be more thin, less voluminous, and more likely to crease or sag easily. How long do results last?
BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® results typically last 3-6 months. The lasting time of your results depends on the volume of neuromodulator used, the size of the targeted area, and your unique facial anatomy. As your muscles and movements change with time, your treatment plan and dosing may also need to change. Your face is uniquely yours and your treatment plan should be too!
Can any wrinkles be treated with BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® neuromodulators?
These products are most effectively used on dynamic wrinkles, which differ from depleted volume, hollow tear troughs, and/or cheek fullness. Some lines and wrinkles are caused by the natural aging process, sun damage, and gravity, and may be best treated with a combination treatment plan to restore lost volume and spark collagen production.
What does treatment feel like?
We prioritize comfort, safety,and a pleasant experience for all of our patients from consultation through to beautiful results. We find that most patients tolerate filler injections quite well. We use numbing cream as well as a local anaesthetic to help keep you comfortable. Additionally, a local anaesthetic, such as lidocaine, is pre-mixed with many injectable treatments. If needed, we may also medicate you with prescription-strength pain medicine. We also have Penthrox® as an option—an effective, fast-acting, non-opioid inhaled analgesic product that helps greatly with pain and anxiety.
Always communicate any pain or discomfort to your provider, and we will be happy to adjust your treatment appropriately.
Can I combine BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® with other treatments?
Yes! Using different injectable treatments in intentional, artful combinations is one element of Dr. Sajic’s 5 Dimension Skin Plan™— you can learn more about that here. We may customize a treatment plan that targets multiple concerns in one treatment regimen or procedure. Neuromodulators like Botox® can be effectively paired with dermal fillers to combine the smoothing, relaxing, and preventative properties of both treatments. We may address wrinkles, treat the lips and also address undereye circles, contour the jawline or nose, and other volume-related concerns in one treatment.
How are neuromodulators like Botox® different from dermal fillers?
Both treatments are injectables, but neuromodulators act to relax the muscles causing wrinkles or folds. This can have preventative effects; neuromodulators keep lines and folds from forming and deepening by decreasing the repeated movements that cause them. But they also actively smooth existing folds.
Is there downtime needed?
No, non-invasive injectable neuromodulators like BOTOX®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® have long-lasting results without any needed downtime.
