Dermal fillers are administered via injection into the areas of the face sought to be filled in order to eliminate or reduce the wrinkles, folds and volume loss. Dermal fillers help by increasing lost volume and smoothing out deep creases in the face.
Dermal fillers are a clear, transparent gel that is injected under your skin into the tissues of your face using a thin gauge needle. The depth of the injections will depend on the area being treated. Multiple injections might be made depending on area and depth of wrinkle.
Many areas can be treated with dermal fillers including, nasolabial folders, or laugh lines, cheeks, lips, under eyes, hollowed temples, and even indented scars from acne.
Treatment time can range from 30-60 minutes in length depending on area and amount of product being used. After treatment, patients are asked not to touch, rub or manipulate the treated areas. Feeling small lumps is common but should not be visible and will settle within a few days.
The number of treatments needed can vary depending on the amount of filler being used to achieve overall result. Most areas to be treated can be completed in one treatment.
Maintenance can vary depending on the filler used and area treated.
Lips – maintain every 9 to 12 months
Undereyes – maintain every 9 to 12 months
Structured facial features like cheeks, temples, jawline, chin – maintain every 18 to 24 months
Mild to moderate discomfort is associated with filler treatment. A topical anesthetic is an option that can be used to reduce the initial discomfort. Dermal fillers have local anesthetic in them, which takes effect immediately upon injection.
After treatment, patients are advised not to touch or manipulate the treatment site. Initial swelling directly after treatment is common and can take anywhere from 24-48 hours to dissipate. Bruising can occur and can last 3-7 days. Increased bruising is common in patients that use substances that reduce blood clotting such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, alcohol or even green tea.
Results can be seen immediately after treatment. However, best results are seen once the filler has settled; approximately 2 weeks post-injection.
