Chemicals peels help to improve the appearance of the skin. The treatment works by applying a chemical solution, general containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid or lactic acid to the skin which causes the top layer (superficial layer) of skin to lift and eventually peel off. This leaves new, fresh skin that is often smoother with less imperfections.
This treatment helps to improve fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and acne breakouts. Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, hands and often on the back or chest for patients suffering with acne.
Generally, a peel is booked for 30 minutes with the procedure lasting about 15 minutes.
This can depend on skin condition to be treated and chemical peel used. Generally desired results can be achieved after 1 to 3 treatments.
Generally Chemical Peels are recommended once per year or once per season depending on the patient.
There is generally little discomfort with having a chemical peel done. Some patients have said they feel a tingling or slight burning sensation, similar to that of a sunburn, for about 5 minutes after the peel has been applied.
Chemical peels can cause the skin to feel warm and a bit itchy. There is normally some redness in the area for about 3-7 days post treatment. Sometimes longer depending on the depth of treatment.
With a mild-depth treatment, some peeling will begin the second day post treatment and can last up to 7 days. This treatment can be repeated 1-4 weeks apart, as needed. With a medium-depth treatment, peeling will begin around the second day post treatment and can last for a period of 7-14 days. This treatment can be repeated 6-12 weeks apart, as needed.
Once the redness and peeling have subsided, you will begin to see results. This is generally 3-4 weeks post treatment with a mild-depth peel and can take up to 4 months post medium-depth peels. Skin texture and tone are improved to leave the skin even, smoother, and softer.
